A CONTRIBUTION TO THE KNOWLEDGE OF ASTRAL SYMBOLS ON THE MIRILO MONUMENTS OF SOUTHERN VELEBIT
Sažetak
The paper analyses the iconographic-symbolic structure of the depicted astral motifs at the Southern Velebit mirilo resting sites: the archetypal solar disc (cross in a circle), the solar cross in a circle with four carved holes in each of the four fields of the disc, the decorated petal-shaped circle with an inscribed cross, the rosette, the archetypal swastika, the modified four-pointed swastika, the rotating swastika with spirals, and the pentagram. The analysis used cultural and religious knowledge from the pre-Christian and medieval periods, recent written sources, folklore material and traditional narratives from the 20th century. The motifs are interpreted in a religious-symbolic context with analogous comparisons with symbols of the same or similar iconographic characteristics on funeral monuments in the narrower geographical area. With morphological analysis, the same motif is presented in various ways, from simple to very complex depictions. The method of analysis and comparison establishes that the symbols interpret the solar-religious and spiritual expression of traditional thought characteristic of the Southern Velebit understanding of the deceased’s immortal soul and its eternal life in the other world. In the context of folklore tradition, traditional narratives from the 20th century and written sources, a possible remnant of pre-Christian funeral symbolism is indicated, which points to the connection between the soul and the Sun on the sacred stone of a mirilo monument. The aim of this paper is an analytical treatment of astral ideograms as artistic and symbolic motifs, with a parallel presentation of the worship of the Sun in the world of the living on Southern Velebit.
