Sažetak
The article presents the results of research on liberalism and liberal philosophy in Kršćanska škola (The Christian School, Zagreb, 1897–1945), a journal that, in its very first year of publication, set itself the task of “clearly speaking out against liberalism.” Liberalism is mentioned in nearly 300 different bibliographic entries in the journal, mostly during the period when it was edited (1897–1906) by Matija Seigerschmied (1864–1942). Articles on liberalism are most often categorized under the news sections, resulting in a particular narrative: sharp, populist remarks about liberalism. The placement of contributions on liberalism affected not only the scope and quality of the texts but also their topics – at least half of the writings on liberalism deal with events outside of Croatia. Under the scrutiny of the journal’s contributors and editorial board, these shorter pieces focus on manifestations of liberal individualism and religious indifference. On the other hand, the journal includes only a few more extensive works that critically address the philosophical foundations of liberalism and liberal philosophy, authored by Jambreković, Marić, and Oberšky. Their writings discuss liberalism’s efforts to ground morality independently of religion and its advocacy for the establishment of the so-called “godless state.” Finally, the absence of any contribution offering a comprehensive theoretical critique of liberalism or liberal philosophy is undoubtedly a significant shortcoming for a journal that had set out to “clearly speak out against liberalism.”
