Sažetak

Pavao Tijan was a Croatian lexicographer, publicist and cultural activist who was born in Senj in 1908 and died in Madrid in 1997. Due to his exceptional and wide range of knowledge and interests, he became a private tutor to children from noble and other prominent families, which later facilitated his communication and networking in the upper social classes of Croatia and other
countries in Europe and the world. He was a professor at the Archbishop’s Classical Gymnasium in Zagreb. He began his lexicographic activity as an assistant editor of the Croatian Literary Society of St Jerome; he was one of the founders and a member of the editorial board of the Hrvatska enciklopedija (launched during the Independent State of Croatia), he was the editor of several magazines and series, as well as the author of texts and reviews in Croatian and foreign languages. He dedicated numerous articles, essays and books to the town of Senj, and one of the most important publications is Hrvatski kulturni spomenici (Croatian Cultural Monuments) and its first issue Senj, published by the Yugoslav Academy of Sciences and Arts in 1940. He emigrated in 1945, and throughout his whole time in Italy and Spain, he remained active in the fight for Croatia’s independence in political, economic and cultural terms. Never politically engaged, with a distinctly expressed national consciousness, he directed his activities towards the development and progress of free scientific thought and culture and their independence from political influences. The preserved written materials of Pavao Tijan are kept in the Archives of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts in Zagreb. The focus of this paper is Tijan’s contribution to the recording and affirming of the heritage values of Senj, especially those of architecture.
