Abstract

This paper examines the reading practices of Generation Z, with a particular focus on their aesthetic responses to literary texts. The theoretical framework is based on Rita Felski’s typology of aesthetic responses, which includes recognition, enchantment, knowledge, and shock. The study aims to explore how Felski’s typology applies to the "digital natives" generation and how their digital environment shapes or transforms these responses. The research is based on a quantitively-qualitative methodology: the analysis of surveys and semi-structured interviews with students at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Zagreb. The results show that, among these respondents, enchantment manifests in waves of intense immersion ("binge-reading"); recognition is often metaphorical and affiliative; knowledge is redefined as an emotional and cultural insight; and shock is rare and requires a high threshold. The study also reveals specific practices, such as the use of digital platforms, transmedia approaches, emotional regulation through reading, and pronounced metacognitive awareness of reading habits.
