Archival Register and Dossiers of Creators of Documentary and Archival Materials: Historical Development and the Digital Perspective

Abstract
The collection of creators’ dossiers under the jurisdiction of the Croatian State Archives is the result of several decades of development in the management of (internal) records related to the creators of documentary and archival materials. It is closely linked to the Register of Creators under Archival Jurisdiction, which forms the basis for the collection. This paper explores the development and changes in approaches to the creators’ dossiers and its register over the decades, beginning in the 1950s, when more active and ystematic consideration was given to archival materials generated by creators. Survey forms, created as part of a major campaign carried out during the 1950s and 1960s to detect and record documentary and archival materials held by its creators, gradually evolved into extensive card indexes and bound registers of creators of documentary and archival materials with accompanying dossiers. With the development of the digital age, these registers of creators migrated into various forms of electronic registers. A significant turning point in the system was the publication of the List of Creatorsunder Archival Jurisdiction on the official website of the Croatian State Archives. This list, presented in a single unified table, embraces creators under the jurisdiction of the Croatian State Archives as well as all other existing state archives in Croatia. The article analyses and presents the collection of creators’ dossiers as a starting point i.e. a link between the traditional, analogue approach to registering creators and the new National Archival Information System (NAIS, known also as eArhiv), which standardises practices and procedures concerning creators and holders of archival materials across the Republic of Croatia and facilitates work and data access in a digital environment.
