Sažetak

This paper presents an analysis of the phonology of the Turkish standard language in comparison with Croatian. In comparing the Turkish and Croatian phonetic systems, the paper focuses on the phonological descriptions of allophones of Turkish vowel and consonant phonemes that are not present in the Croatian language. The main objective of this paper is threefold: firstly, to highlight the similarities and differences between the phonetic systems of these two genetically and typologically distinct languages; secondly, to contribute to a more comprehensive understanding and knowledge of the Turkish phonetic system; and thirdly, to elucidate the challenges frequently encountered in the morphophonological analysis of the Turkish language among Croatian speakers, largely due to an inadequate grasp of the subject matter. The paper attempts to employ appropriate phonological terminology to delineate the most challenging areas of the Turkish phonetic system for speakers of Croatian. Its theoretical foundation is rooted in Croatian and foreign phonological research of these two languages. The phonemes and allophones are described in terms of their place and manner of articulation and are recorded using symbols from the International Phonetic Alphabet. The allophones of Turkish phonemes focused in the paper are described in relation to their phonetic environment. The analysis shows that the areas of divergence between the Turkish and Croatian phonetic systems present the primary obstacle to the adoption of the Turkish phonetic system among Croatian speakers. This impedes their ability to master Turkish orthoepy, communicate effectively with native Turkish speakers, accurately analyze the language morphophonologically and produce the language correctly.
