Sažetak

Based on archival material deposited at the State Archives in Pazin, the paper presents the levels of design and a stylistic analysis of posters as a communication and advertising medium used to announce programmes and film screenings in the Poreč Kinematograf (Cinema) at the beginning of the 20th century. It is possible, drawing on the posters and announcements of the shows preserved in the State Archives in Pazin, to gain an exceptionally good insight into the programme repertoire of the Poreč Cinema at that time. The paper analyses a total of 93 of the posters of film shows that were published in Poreč over a one-year period, specifically in 1912. Given that the main purpose of a poster is to provoke an intense emotional reaction in a passerby/observer in a brief period of time, a reaction which will motivate them to act in accordance with what the poster promotes, in addition to the visual design of the poster, the stylistic features of the posters are also very important. The academic literature regarding the functional stylistics of our region has not fully and unambiguously determined the place of posters within the system of functional styles. Although there is not much information in the literature on the stylistic definition of posters, the design of posters can still be traced in several functional styles: advertising style, journalistic style and literary style (drama). The importance of figurativeness for style and stylistics is unquestionable. Figurativeness as the basis of stylistic expression implies an unusual, symbolic expression, often employed in a figurative sense. Accordingly, the paper identified and further explained and exemplified various stylistic devices and figures (14 in total) that can be observed in the studied posters, such as paradoxes, euphemisms, personifications, onomatopoeias, metonymies, metaphors, alliterations, wordplays, etc., all used in an attempt to attract, but also to retain, as much as possible the attention of passersby/observers who may or should be potential film viewers.
