Sažetak
The year 2024 marks the “20th anniversary of Integrative Bioethics” because the birthplace of Integrative Bioethics is rightly considered to be the international conference Bioethik in Süd- und Südosteuropa. Chancen einer integrativen ethischen Reflexion vor dem Hintergrund intrakultureller Differenzen in Europa, which was held in Dubrovnik, September 1–3, 2004, as a result of the collaboration of two scientific projects – “Nutzenkultur vs. Normenkultur: Zu den intrakulturellen Differenzen in der westlichen Bioethik” (Ruhr University Bochum, project leader: Walter Schweidler, scientific collaborator: Thomas Sören Hoffmann) and “Bioethics and Philosophy” (University of Zagreb, project leader: Ante Čović). However, the idea of Integrative Bioethics did not come “from nowhere”, but emerged from some earlier movements, primarily in Croatia, where it is worth highlighting the extensive, long-lived and influential publishing, scientific and cultural project “Filozofska istraživanja” [Philosophical Investigations], through which the concept of integrative thinking has been articulated and is still being developed since the early 1980s, as well as the very beginnings and accelerated development of bioethical debate in Croatia, in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Therefore, this paper presents the emergence and development of the concept of Integrative Bioethics, taking into account both the explicit and implicit dimensions of its history, which also implies the “decoding” of previously unknown or unrecognized moments in that history. Relying on published publications and previously unpublished documents, the author structures his review in three stages: (1) the prehistory of the concept of Integrative Bioethics – the principle of integrativity; (2) the protohistory of the concept of Integrative Bioethics – Integrative Bioethics as a background concept; and (3) the history of the concept of Integrative Bioethics – Integrative Bioethics as a leading concept.
