Abstract

What should Integrative Bioethics integrate that is not already integrated? Two sources of bioethical thinking that are often seen as opposites: the normativity of life itself and the claim to self-determination of subjects. In journalistic reports on pregnancy and birth, this paper identifies the clash between claims to autonomy and limitations on the realization of the will. The first of these lies in the fact that for the self the other is the facilitator of freedom, which no one alone can realize. This is not made explicit in the lifeworld-cultural testimonies, as they follow a widespread idea of individual self-determination. By reporting on precarious self-realization, however, it is precisely what is not stated that shows the “gap” in self-reflection, which is the condition of the possibility of freedom.
