Multicriteria Spatial Evaluation of Quality of Life in Urban Areas: A Case Study of City of Split

Sažetak
The aim of this study is to assess the quality of life in the city of Split using a multi-criteria spatial analysis based on GIS tools. The analysis included seven criteria covering environmental factors (noise, green spaces), infrastructural aspects (traffic, accessibility of educational institutions), and socio-economic indicators (housing prices, population density, and built-up area). All criteria were normalized and weighted according to their importance and subsequently aggregated into a comprehensive quality-of-life index at the neighborhood level. The results are presented cartographically, enabling the identification of spatial patterns and inequalities within the city. The findings reveal pronounced differences in quality of life across Split’s neighborhoods. Western districts stand out with higher quality-of-life scores due to favorable environmental conditions and better accessibility to amenities, whereas eastern and peripheral districts exhibit lower index values as a result of traffic congestion, higher noise levels, and limited access to public services. The developed methodological framework proved to be transparent and flexible, with the possibility of being extended to include additional criteria such as safety, air quality, or accessibility of healthcare facilities. Thus, this approach can be applied not only to Split but also to other cities, providing a valuable tool for urban planning, decision-making, and reducing spatial inequalities in quality of life.
