Sažetak
In accordance with the comprehensive Neo-Gothic approach, stained glass was added to the representative exterior windows of the Zagreb cathedral during restorations in the 19th century. These stained-glass panes can be found in nineteen windows on the walls of the main and side apses, as well as the outer walls of the side aisles. Their creation can be divided chronologically into two phases. The first phase includes the production of stained glass for the windows in the central apse between 1845 and 1849 during the restoration of the sanctuary initiated by Bishop Juraj Haulik. He commissioned five stained-glass windows with figurative representations from the Royal Institute for Glass Painting in Munich (Königliche Glasmalereianstalt). The central three-part window (trifora depicts the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, patron of the Zagreb cathedral. The model for this central stained-glass window was the large five-part central window in the apse of the Church of Mary, Help of Christians, in Au, a suburb of Munich. To the left and right of the central window, there are two two-part windows (biforas). St Stephen, King of Hungary, co-patron of the cathedral, is depicted on the left window with two medallions above him illustrating the Betrothal of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Annunciation. Next to him is another two-part window featuring St Mark the Evangelist and St Demetrius, patron of the Diocese of Đakovo and Srijem, with medallions depicting the Annunciation of the Birth of the Virgin to St Joachim, and the Birth of Mary. To the right of the central window is a bifora depicting St. Ladislaus, King of Hungary, also a co-patron of the cathedral and founder of the Diocese of Zagreb. In the upper part of this window, medallions show the Nativity of Jesus and the Presentation in the Temple. The rightmost bifora in the sanctuary depicts St Quirinus, Bishop of Sescia and martyr, and Blessed Augustine Kažotić, Bishop of Zagreb and educator in the early 14th century. Above them are medallions depicting Jesus in the Temple and the Death of Mary.
The second phase of acquiring stained glass was part of the thorough restoration of the cathedral led by Herman Bollé at the end of the 19th century. At that time, fourteen additional stained-glass windows were ordered for the side aisles and apses from the companies ‘Geyling & Erben’ in Vienna and ‘Tiroler Glasmalerei und Kathedral-Glashütte: Neuhauser, Dr. Jele & Comp.’ in Innsbruck. The motifs of these stained-glass windows matched the wall and vault paintings and were decorated with so-called Teppichmuster patterns based on Bollé’s designs. They did not have figurative portrayals, except for the coats of arms of donors depicted in the lower fields. One of these windows also includes a list of all collaborators involved in the restoration of the cathedral.
The stained-glass windows were damaged in the earthquake on 22 March 2020, leading to a decision to dismantle those in the apses, and those on the side walls of the aisles remained in situ. The condition of the stained glass was thoroughly documented before dismantling and transport to the workshop. The dismantling process was carried out with exceptional care, minimizing any additional expected damage. After transport to the workshop, the surface of the stained-glass windows was cleaned, and detailed expert documentation continued. They were properly stored and await full restoration.
