Abstract

This paper examines the role of Antun Radić’s Osnova (Guidelines for the Collection and Study of Material on Folk Life) in shaping cultural boundaries and national identity at the end of the 19th century. Through an analysis of its theoretical and empirical sections, the author demonstrates how Radić’s questions constructed perceptions of the “Other” – including members of the urban class, Roma, Jews, the poor, certain women, and other “corrupt” or marginal individuals and groups within the “folk.” The paper argues that Radić’s Osnova functioned not only as an ethnographic tool, but also as a normative mechanism for distinguishing the socially acceptable from the excluded.
