Professor Vitomir Belaj on the Trace of Bunjevci Ethnogenesis

Sažetak
Starting from professor Vitomir Belaj’s academic article “Traditional Mountain Cattle Breeding on the Mountain of Velebit and Ethnogenesis of Bunjevci,” which he wrote inspired by the results of Milana Černelić’s doctoral thesis “Selected Phenomena of the Wedding Customs of Bunjevac Croats as a Source for the Study of Their Ethnogenesis” for which he served as a mentor, the authors point to the importance of different views and the thematic extent of ethnological research to shed light on the ethnogenesis of Bunjevac. At the time of the publication of the Belaj’s article, the research project “Identity and Ethnogenesis of the Bunjevci in the Primorje Region” was initiated. As part of this project, ethnologist Marijeta Rajković Iveta began researching the migration processes of the Bunjevci in the Primorje Region and collected extensive ethnographic material on seasonal migrations on the coastal side of Velebit. The paper provides a brief overview of the results of Vitomir Belaj’s research and the research of the ethnologists that came after him. It also points to the complexity and challenges of analyzing various sources, their possible complementation, the use of different methodologies and theoretical approaches in researching the elements of Bunjevac culture (wedding customs and traditional practices of seasonal migration to summer settlements because of cattle breeding) in different time periods, which reveal more information regarding the Bunjevci ethnogenesis.
