Abstract

Despite his claim he knew nothing about music, Joseph Roth surprisingly wrote about it quite extensively in his journalistic and literary texts. The beginning and ending of his conscious musical experience is marked by
Jewish-Ukrainian folklore, introduced to him by his friend Soma Morgenstern, who also facilitated his encounter with modernism in music.
