Abstract

One of the central topics in the work of Joseph Roth is the experience of
loss that accompanied the collapse of the Habsburg multi-ethnic empire. Both his early post-war retournee novels and journalistic texts, as well as his later nostalgic narratives and publicist writings, are characterized by a
constellation of post-imperial interdependencies linked to the isintegration of Eurasian empires and the emergence of new nation-states. This paper illustrates the issue by means of analyzing two representative texts, whereby special attention is paid to the role of post-imperial discourse and its specific articulation in fictional and journalist formats.
