A Contribution to the Understanding of the History of Mountaineering in Liburnia: Historical Overview of Activities of the "TRIS" Mountaineering Club Lovran (2002-2019)

Abstract
The Croatian Mountaineering Club „TRIS“ (hereinafter: the Club) has remained largely unnoticed in local and regional mountaineering and cultural history, and its activities have been completely unexplained. This was certainly influenced by its activity in the shadow of longer-established mountaineering associations from Lovran itself and the wider Liburnia area, which prevented it from securing broader membership and resulted in a relatively short period of activity. Its activities were characterised by innovative ideas (e.g. combining different outdoor activities – mountaineering/trekking, rafting and skiing – into a unique mountaineering association), ambitious plans (e.g. an expedition to the Andes and the construction of a new mountain hut) and a significant contribution to local mountaineering and tourist content (e.g. information boards along hiking trails). This paper examines the work and activities of the Club, from its founding in 2002 through its first three years of growth and momentum to a period of crisis and stagnation, and ultimately its dissolution. The paper is based on the analysis of available archival sources from several collections, with the core material drawn from the archive of the president of the Club, which contains detailed and fairly complete data on the overall activities of the Society and its membership, as well as a very detailed chronology of its activities. By researching and elucidating the work and activities of the Croatian Mountaineering Club „TRIS“ Lovran, this paper aims to contribute to a better understanding of the history of local and regional mountaineering in particular.
