Sažetak

The manner in which an individual relates to themselves is the outcome of a long and complex process of maturation, beginning at birth and shaped by primary relationships that influence not only how a person relates to others but also how they relate to themselves. Healthy and supportive interpersonal relationships contribute significantly to the development of a positive self-relationship. Conversely, experiences of judgment, criticism, rejection, or isolation can adversely affect a person’s self-perception over time, impacting their internal dialogue and intrapersonal communication. Two important processes that foster a healthy relationship with oneself are self-compassion and self-empathy. Through self-compassion, an individual learns to observe themselves with kindness, understanding, and a gentle distance, rather than with harsh judgment. Self-empathy involves recognition and validation of one’s own emotions and needs, thereby creating space for inner healing and resilience. Research consistently finds that self-compassion and self-empathy are strongly associated with mental health benefits. They enhance psychological well-being, resilience, and healthy cognitive and emotional functioning, while reducing symptoms of depression, anxiety, loneliness, and feelings of isolation. Moreover, spirituality, particularly the relationship with God, plays a crucial role in nurturing a compassionate relationship with both oneself and others. Within a spiritual context, individuals often find a deeper sense of acceptance, purpose, and unconditional love, which profoundly supports inner growth and connection.
