Sažetak
The aim of the paper is to present trends in Croatian sheep and goat farming in the last three decades, with particular emphasis on the number of livestock, breeding and selection work As well as production traits. In the last three decades, significant structural changes have been noticeable in Croatian sheep and goat farming. According to the latest available data, 552 000 sheep and 73 000 goats are bred in the Republic of Croatia. Numerous procedures and measures have been implemented with the aim of the production improvement, through the task of improving the breeding, management and technical/technological picture of the sector. Analysis of the above production over the last three decades shows initial trends of an increase in the total population of sheep and goats, but in recent years a decrease in the number of sheep and goats as well as milk yield, and an increase in the meat production has been recorded. According to original data (HAPIH, 2024), 514 234 sheep and 62 748 goats are bred in Croatia, of which 37 417 sheep and 7 804 goats are registered as herdbook animals. In total, 23 breeds of sheep (9 native and 14 foreign) and 7 breeds of goats (3 native and 4 foreign) are represented in breeding. Along with the quantitative and qualitative improvement of sheep and goat production in the last three decades in Croatia, together with the implementation of the proposed guidelines for the sustainability and development of these sectors, and with increased work and significant investments in the modernization and wider application of modern breeding and technological procedures, productivity and welfare will be improved, and better monitoring of the livestock health will be ensured. These will contribute to increasing the efficiency and profitability of sheep and goat production
