TWO TYPES OF KRIŽEVCI’S COUNTRYSIDE FAMILIES IN THE PREMODERN ERA. FAMILY CYCLE AND DYNAMICS OF KRIŽEVCI’S COUNTRYSIDE FAMILIES IN THE 18TH AND 19TH CENTURIES

Sažetak
The typology of families based on family dynamics and the family cycle recognises two basic types: a nuclear/family of origin, with one married heir/heiress in the parental home, and a complex family in which all male descendants marry within
the parental home. Both types, typologically clearly profiled, are found in the Križevci countryside, in twelve villages of the Križevci Parish. A-type, small families with one to two married couples in the house, are grouped in the northwestern part of the parish, and are characterised by later marriages, small families with up to two married couples (almost always father and son/daughter), a small number of young newlyweds <20, and frequency of uxorilocal husbands. In contrast, in type B families, which are more distinctly grouped in the villages of the southeast, along the Military Frontier, marriages are entered into earlier on average, so that <20 marriages predominate, and families are large, from 15 to 30 or more members. Periodically, these large families split (fission); there are no uxorilocal husbands at all, the household is inherited patrilineally, but also indirectly (nephews, brothers, cousins). Families are often connected in larger clusters that frequently intermarry, not necessarily within the same village. The division into two types of Križevci countryside families reveals connections with similar typologies established in different parts of Christian Europe, while also exhibiting its own distinct characteristics, allowing us to speak of a special typology of Križevci countryside. Future research and mapping will provide an answer to the question of how special this Križevci typology really is and how much it may, in fact, be a broader, northern Croatian phenomenon.
