Sažetak

This paper analyses two important anthologies of contemporary Burgenland Croatian poetry: the bilingual Ptići i slavuji – Hawks and Nightingales (1983) and the trilingual Rušimo granice – Überwinden wir Grenzen – Breaking Down Borders (2022). In Hawks and Nightingales, eight poets from Austria are represented, while in Breaking Down Borders not only has the number of languages increased from two to three, but the number of included poets has also significantly expanded: in the second anthology there are poems by a total of 23 poets from five countries – Austria, Hungary, Slovakia, the Czech Republic (Moravia), and Italy. In addition to researching the existing professional and scientific literature on these two books, as well as on the authors whose poems are included in them, in the literaryhistorical and literary-theoretical sense, the selected poems of all represented authors were analysed in detail, and the thematic and motive register, as well as the poetic foundations of each author were established. It is noticeable that the themes of death, transience, and disappearance frequently appear in the poems included in both anthologies. Through these topics, the authors aim to highlight the most significant issue which they face, the assimilation of Burgenland Croats, which can only be halted through a conscious integration into all streams of Croatian culture and national social processes. It is noticeable that in the poems included in both anthologies, death, transience and disappearance are often thematised, with which the authors want to draw attention to the biggest problem they face, which is the assimilation of Burgenland Croats, which can only be stopped by conscious inclusion in all streams of the Croatian culture and all national social processes.
