Differential Directional Dative Marking in Old East Slavic and Different Periods of the Croatian Language

Abstract
The paper investigates the influence of the semantic features of nouns and the derivational and semantic features of verbs on differential directional dative marking in Old Russian and in different periods of the Croatian language. The analysis of these two factors was conducted on material retracted from five different corpora representing different languages and language periods (Old East Slavic, Old Croatian, Croatian language of the 16th and 19th centuries, and Modern Croatian). In the samples from corpora, all the bare dative and prepositional directional datives were annotated for the five same verbs *jьti ‘ to go’, *dojьti ‘to come’, *pojьti ‘ to depart’, *prijьti ‘to arrive’, and *pristǫpiti ‘to approach’. Conclusions about the impact on differential directional dative marking in the researched corpora are based on percentages of bare dative cases and on statistical significance comparisons. The research showed that the semantic and derivational features of verbs affect differential directional dative marking in modern Croatian. On the other hand, the semantic features of nouns influence the differential directional dative marking in Old East Slavic and in all the considered language periods of Croatian. Based on the results, the paper outlines diachronic changes in differential directional dative marking in Slavic languages, with special regard to Croatian.
