The influence of Azospirillum brasilense on growth and leaf macronutrient composition of pot-grown sweet cherry rootstocks

Sažetak

Sweet cherry is a popular stone fruit, particularly for fresh consumption. SL 64, MaxMa 14 and Gisela 5 are rootstocks with good adaptability to different production areas. Plant growth-promoting hizobacteria directly or indirectly affect plant development. Azospirillum brasilense contributes positively to plant growth. The influence of A. brasilense on pot-grown stone fruit rootstocks has been insufficiently investigated. The aim of the work was to determine the vegetative activity, chlorophyll content index (CCI) and leaf macronutrient composition of three cherry rootstocks due to the application of A. brasilense. The study investigated the effect of the microbial fertilizer AZOS (A. brasilense, 10⁶ CFU g⁻¹) on vegetative growth, chlorophyll content index (CCI), and leaf macronutrient content of pot-grown cherry rootstocks SL 64, MaxMa 14, and Gisela 5. The field experiment was conducted using a randomized complete block design with three replications. Treatments included included monthly (T1, 1.12 g L⁻¹), bi-monthly (T2), and control (T0) applications. Leaf samples were collected and analyzed in the laboratory. Data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA, and the significance of differences between mean values was determined by Duncan’s multiple range test (p<0.05). Based on the obtained results, T1 and T2 increased TCSA (103.8 and 101.5 vs. 93.9 mm²), CCI (T×R interaction, P<0.05), N content (1.83 and 1.72 vs. 1.53%) and reduced Ca (1.26 and 1.21 vs. 1.35%). SL 64 showed highest TCSA (124.5 mm²) and MaxMa 14 highest N (1.86%). This was first field study documenting A. brasilense genotype-specific effects on cherry rootstocks, validating PGPR potential to reduce mineral fertilizer use in pot production.
