Abstract

Faced with the environmental challenges associated with the widespread use of synthetic insecticides, the agricultural sector is increasingly exploring alternative approaches to crop protection. Botanical insecticides, although known for centuries, are gaining significance in organic farming, particularly in fruit growing, where there is a need for effective yet environmentally friendly crop protection. Although botanical insecticides are natural compounds with a history spanning several centuries, synthetic insecticides have become dominant due to their rapid action, low costs, and broad-spectrum effectiveness. However, the prolonged use of synthetic insecticides has led to negative consequences, causing harmful effects on the environment, humans, and non-target organisms. This paper analyzes the application of botanical insecticides in fruit growing, such as pyrethrin and azadirachtin. Additionally, the increasing use of essential oil-based insecticides, especially in the last decade. The application of botanical insecticides aligns with the principles of organic and sustainable agriculture and represents an important step towards sustainable management in fruit growing, as well as reducing the negative impact of synthetic substances.
