Ramon Llull on the Relation Between Philosophy and Religion

Abstract

Ramon Llull (1235 – 1315) was a philosopher, theologian and writer who reflected on important philosophical and religious issues of his time and milieu. In the context of a multi-religious society, he considered the possibility of peaceful coexistence between Christians, Jews, and Muslims by promoting unity. Adopting the medieval understanding of the relationship between philosophy and religion as one of scientific demonstration, criticism and self-criticism, Llull modified this concept by introducing unique interpretations, emphases and orders. To this end, he created the first philosophical system conceived exclusively in relation to religions, called Ars. Llull’s approach was rationalistic in content and method but religious in origin and purpose, which secured him a unique place in the history of medieval philosophy. His work is still important today in promoting a philosophically structured interreligious dialogue.
