Sažetak

As a formalised relationship with the transcendent, religion in the pre-modern era defined not only the reach of political authority but also humanity’s »final purpose« beyond history Liberal-secular society is considered to have surpassed the need for religion in such a public role. However, today we are witnessing a trend of the de-privatisation of religion. Is this a symptom of the crisis of liberalism that is increasingly being discussed? Or is it an attempt, outside traditional religion but using the language and form of faith, to give an entelechiological meaning to human existence within society and history? Or is it a populist effort to undermine the liberal political project? Regardless of the reason behind the de-privatisation of religion, there is a risk of returning to the pre-modern dynamic of the politicisation of religion and the sacralisation of politics. Nevertheless, according to Jürgen Habermas, the rehabilitation of religion in the public sphere does not have to be reactionary. This article thus examines the efforts of Patrick J. Deneen and Francis Fukuyama in search of a third way – one that is neither antagonistic to the legacy of the Enlightenment nor indifferent to the dialectic of “myth” and “Enlightenment”, that is, of religion and critical reason.
