Sažetak

The book of income and expenses is only one of the many notebooks that the Franciscans kept for centuries in the Croatian language using Glagolitic script. Concise and simple, the numerous entries recording the revenues and expenditures of the Monastery of St Mary at Glavotok reveal a wealth of interesting information about the religious community of the Franciscan Tertiaries and their neighbours living in the surrounding settlements. The data recorded in the Book of Income and Expenses show that in the observed period, from October 1842 to October 1843, expenditures exceeded income, which was not unusual in the nineteenth century. The friars shared the fate of their environment in both fertile and infertile years. The kvateran provides a picture of everyday monastic life and of the relations between the Tertiaries and peasants and fishermen from the island of Krk, shepherds and craftsmen from Cres, as well as itinerant merchants who moored their boats along the monastery walls and traded with the friars. The monks frequently visited brethren from other monasteries, thereby becoming acquainted with new developments in land cultivation and the breeding of new varieties, and offering an example of progressive economic practices to the inhabitants of nearby villages. In addition to information important for the Franciscan Third Order and the economic history of the island of Krk, the books of income and expenses recount details of diet, medicine, clothing, utensils, tools, domestic animals, boats and fishing, as well as visitors, servants, and superiors, encounters and journeys, grape and grain harvests, scarcity and abundance, the church, rituals, inventory and vestments, and the construction and improvement of property. Living together with the inhabitants of the surrounding villages for five and a half centuries and mutually assisting one another, the Franciscan Tertiaries became deeply rooted and an integral part of the population of the western part of the island of Krk.
