Abstract
Purpose. Education and upbringing for sustainable development is a strategic issue of the Green Library at the Faculty of Education, Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek. The library, as a center of information literacy, informs and implements ecological knowledge and practices through various activities for students, future educators, as well as preschool children. Through ecological programs throughout the year, green communication is established with educational institutions and the wider local community. In this way, the general level of ecological awareness and interconnection is raised. The challenges posed by ecology and sustainable development for new generations require ready and thoughtful action to save the disrupted ecosystem. The aim of the paper is to present an overview of the activities of the Green Library over the past ten years and the results from a student perspective on the aforementioned activities.
Approach. The paper provides an overview of the ecological activities that the Green Library has carried out over a ten-year period, transferring ecological knowledge and practices to students, future educators, and preschool children. The paper also presents an analysis of students' assessment papers on environmental topics and the results of a survey conducted among students of the University undergraduate study Early and Preschool Education (EPCE) and students of the Graduate study Early and Preschool Education in 2024, as well as their attitudes towards environmental content and practices.
The results. Based on the results obtained - analysis of the content of diploma and final theses in the FOOZOS Repository, it is evident that students choose environmental topics for their works. From the qualitative analysis of the interviews, it can be concluded that students are aware of their environment and that it is important to them, but they are not ready to actively participate in the processes.
Originality. Value. The paper focuses on a systematic review of the environmental activities carried out by the FOOZOS Green Library over a ten-year period. Through these activities, the organization continuously works to raise awareness of ecology and sustainable development among the student population, and through workshops with preschool and early school-age children, it creates the foundations for environmental awareness from an early age.
