Sažetak
The name of Jagoda Truhelka in Croatian literature is most commonly associated
with her work in the field of children’s literature, primarily due to the
success of her children’s novel Zlatni danci. However, her literary oeuvre is
much broader and thematically more diverse, encompassing a wide range of
genres and motifs. One of the more significant, yet often overlooked, parts of
her body of work is the psychological novel Plein air (1897), which stands out
as one of the earliest works that anticipates key developments in Croatian modernism.
This paper aims to demonstrate, by analyzing the narrative elements
of romance as discussed by Pamela Regis, how Plein air incorporates all the
essential components typical of a love story, while also showing that the novel
extends beyond the boundaries of a simple romance, engaging instead with
more complex issues, thereby asserting itself as one of the important feminist
novels in Croatian literature.
