Physical and Creative Activities as Foundations for the Integration of Children with Developmental Disabilities (Example: Special School “Zlatan Sremec” in Osijek)

Sažetak
In developing their topic, the authors analyze the educational plan and curriculum for children with various disabilities who attended the Special School Zlatan Sremec Special School in Osijek during the period from 1963 to 1991. Drawing on preserved archival materials housed in the records of the Ivan Štark Centre for Education and Care in Osijek, they trace this population through programs of physical and creative activities, viewed as a basis for enriching students’ social life and leisure time at school. Through participation in small groups of creative activities (such as the vocal and instrumental cultural and arts society, the Book Friends Club, drama and recitation groups, tapestry workshops, photography club, etc.) and physical activities (football, handball, table tennis, shooting, and traditional team games), the authors emphasize the importance of these activities—particularly through presentations and public performances—for the successful inclusion of children with various developmental difficulties into active life and work within the wider community. All of this is grounded in the implementation of the school’s educational plan and curriculum. In the conclusion, the authors examine the extent to which physical activities helped children with developmental disabilities realize their developmental potential and mitigate deficits caused by their disabilities, while creative activities contributed to developing skills for applying knowledge in everyday life.
