Constitutional Position of the Kingdom of Slavonia (Regnum or Ducatus vel Banatus).

Sažetak
One of the most complex questions in Croatian constitutional and legal history is the definition
of the legal position of Slavonia. On the one hand, the name of the area appears in the forms
Sclavonia, Sclavinia, Sklavinia, in Hungarian sources Szlavónia or Tótország, and on the other
hand, the designations ducatus, banatus or regnum are used for its constitutional status.
In this paper, we analyze the constitutional and legal position of Slavonia and try to answer the
question of whether it was really a regnum, that is, a kingdom. We believe that the name regnum
is related to the institution of the younger Hungarian king (rex junior), who was crowned during
the lifetime of his father (rex senior) and ruled independently in Croatia and Dalmatia or Slavonia.
Rex junior had all the prerogatives of government, including his own court. Since he was a rex, the
country he ruled was called a regnum. At the time when Slavonia was ruled by the king’s younger
son or ban on behalf of the king, this territory was called ducatus vel banatus.
