From Traditional Library Practices to Digital Competencies: The Contemporary Role of the School Librarian

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to present the role of the school librarian in reconciling the traditional tasks of the school library with contemporary educational demands of the digital environment. The paper analyses the school library’s activities across its educational, professional-library, and cultural-public domains of work, with a particular emphasis on developing students’ reading, information, and media literacy. The topic is addressed through a descriptive-analytical approach based on a review of relevant regulations, professional literature, and examples of
good practice in school library work. The study contributes to the fi eld of school librarianship by showcasing targeted programmes and activities that foster students’ key competencies, while also off ering guidelines for enhancing professional practice in the age of rapidly evolving digital technologies and artifi cial intelligence.
