Abstract

Using the example of the Roma settlement Kvitrovec in Međimurje County, Republic of Croatia, the paper analyses recent sociodemographic and migration characteristics of the Roma population in Međimurje County. The research was conducted in late 2024 and early 2025 via a household-level survey questionnaire in the studied settlement. Using the total coverage method, one adult representative from each of the thirteen households was surveyed. The survey questionnaire covered various socio-demographic characteristics of the population of the studied settlement, including characteristics of natural movement and migration, age-gender, educational and economic structure. A comparison of the results obtained with the results of previous research indicates a significant process of change in certain sociodemographic and economic structures and processes, with an emphasis on emigration from the studied Roma settlement, with the simultaneous presence of traditional and modern mobility patterns. Using the theoretical framework of aspirations and abilities, the results indicate that economic integration of the Roma community acts as a catalyst for migration and point to the conclusion that access to the financial market, enabled by employment and permanent income from employment, is an effective instrument for breaking spatial segregation via the realization of economic opportunities for spatial mobility.
