Nasl’jedovan’je after Marulić’s Naslidovan’je – The Enigma of Manuscript 74 from the Archives of the Friars Minor in Dubrovnik

Sažetak
The manuscript translation of the Latin text De imitatione Christi, titled Od nasl’jedovan’ja Isukrstova i od pogrde od svijeta (1639), has captured the interest of philologists not only because of the translator’s anonymity but also due to unresolved questions regarding its connection to Marulić’s vernacular version Od naslidovan’ja Isukarstova (1500), which has often been regarded as a prototype for later Croatian translations of the Imitation of Christ. This study challenges the hypothesis of some scholars that the manuscript is merely a free adaptation of Marulić’s Čakavian text into the Dubrovnik dialect. It examines the manuscript’s linguistic, stylistic, and traductological features, which point to an independent translation based on the Italian edition I quattro libri di Gio. Gerson della imitatione di Christo, compiled by Remigio Nannini Fiorentino and printed in Venice in 1557. The impact of Fiorentino’s text on Croatian translation is mainly acknowledged through its more flexible interpretation of the Latin original, modifications of the narrative discourse, shifts in language codes, and an effort to render a medieval text, over two hundred years old, more comprehensible to less knowledgeable readers. In the specific context of Dubrovnik, this involved adapting the text to the linguistic experience of native speakers, who may not have understood the Latin original or Italian translation. While the authorship of this manuscript remains unresolved, certain linguistic clues within the text suggest that the translator may be female, which remains a topic for further research.
