Sažetak
This comparative study examines the reception of the Old Testament story of Susanna and the elders in Central European Renaissance literature. It closely analyzes three lyrical-epic works from the 16th century in the vernacular, in Croatian by Marko Marulić, in Polish by Jan Kochanowski, and in Hungarian by András Batizi. Based on philological studies that analyze the relationship of these works with the original biblical text, the presentation examines the similarities and differences of the paraphrases. Special attention is also paid to the spirit of the times and the circumstances of the context, since the story, which came into fashion during the Renaissance, was interpreted as a parable about virtue – exemplary female chastity and fidelity – and also about hope in divine grace and the victory of justice.
