PETROVIA AND ITS BELLS

Sažetak
At the beginning of the First World War, Petrovia – then a chaplaincy dependent on
Umago/Umag – was also affected by the wartime requisitioning of bells imposed
by the Austro-Hungarian government. Of the three bells present in the bell tower,
all cast in 1909, two were removed for military purposes, as documented in the
records preserved in the Diocesan Archive of Trieste. Today, two bells of later date
are present in the belfry of Petrovia: one, dated 1931, produced by the renowned
Brighenti bell foundry of Bologna, and the other cast in 1968 by the foundry of Alfonso
Clocchiatti in Colugna near Udine. In Istria, only one other example from the
Brighenti foundry is currently known; it is preserved in the bell tower of Draguccio/
Draguć and is dated 1929. It therefore remains plausible that the bell which remained
in Petrovia after the wartime requisitions was later replaced with the one cast
by the Clocchiatti foundry.
