Sažetak

Modern healthcare systems are marked by a paradigm shift in the approach to a patient. While traditional medicine is based on a biomedical paradigm, the approach of person-centered care and personalized medicine is currently increasingly emphasized. Although these are concepts that emphasize a higher level of individualization of care and better coordination of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, they are still two paradigmatically different views. While personalized medicine stems from a biomedical framework, person-centered care originates from the perspective of care and the pursuit of a more holistic view of patients. Although there is a significant difference between these two approaches, the assumption is that by bringing them closer together and complementing each other, an even higher level of holistic approach and individualization can be achieved, given that a fully customized diagnostic and therapeutic approach is complemented by the respect for the patient’s experience and value systems.
Such a comprehensive, yet individualized approach must have a direct ethical impact, which is primarily reflected in the change in the principle of autonomy. Namely, while the traditional principle of autonomy requires the patient’s freedom to make decisions based on the information received, in the aforementioned systems it changes its fundamental characteristic, since the decision-making process is not only based on information tailored to each individual patient, but also by the counseling process that takes into account those elements that are neglected in the traditional satisfaction of the principle of autonomy – life experience, value systems, and other characteristics of the person.
