The role of packaging in the protection of eggs from dynamic loads during road transport

This study analyzes the effects of dynamic loads on egg packs during road transport under urban conditions. For the purposes of the study, the vertical displacement of the frame (chassis) of a distribution truck was measured while crossing speed bumps to determine its impact on the transported goods. In addition, the mechanical resistance of three types of egg packaging (cardboard boxes, polystyrene boxes, and expanded polystyrene boxes) to vertical compressive loads was analyzed. The displacements of the chassis caused by driving over bumps led to sudden movements of the load in the vehicle’s cargo area, with maximum vertical displacements of +209 mm and -167 mm. Such dynamic conditions increase the risk of damage to sensitive goods such as eggs. Cardboard boxes showed the highest resistance to vertical compressive forces (541.99 N on average), while expanded and non-expanded polystyrene boxes showed a 6.16% and 24.07% lower resistance respectively. The results show that the transport conditions as well as the design and mechanical properties of the packaging are decisive for the protection of the eggs during transport. Thanks to their internal structure, the cartons distribute the forces efficiently and thus offer better product protection.
