The Germanization of Christianity: Semantic Transformations in the Christianization of the Germanic World (Summary)

This paper analyzes the process of the Christianization of the Germanic peoples between the 6th and 8th centuries, with particular emphasis on the semantic and conceptual adaptations that shaped the narrative and symbolic integration of Christianity into the Germanic social framework. Beyond the political and institutional aspects of conversion, the author approaches the topic from an interdisciplinary perspective—combining historical and linguistic insights—through an analysis of the transformation of key terms such as þegn, wlanc, giscapu, and heil. The central focus lies on how Christian moral and eschatological concepts were translated into the linguistic and cultural patterns of Germanic heroism, honor, and kinship. From this perspective, the paper explores how narratives of salvation, power, and sanctity were reshaped to become conceptually legible to communities previously operating within pagan systems of value. In this context, Christianization is interpreted as a two-way semantic and cultural transformation, rather than a linear expansion of a single religious ideology.
