Translation of loanwords: the example of new German words

Sažetak

This paper examines the approach of the authors of dictionaries of new German words to translating loanwords into Croatian, with an emphasis on anglicisms. The theoretical framework includes an overview of linguistic borrowing as a process of creating new words and a taxonomy of translation procedures for culture–specific items (Veselica Majhut, 2012; Skender Libhard, 2020a) used to analyze translation solutions.
Among the new German words are loanwords that adapt very adroitly to the orthographic, phonological, morphological, and semantic system of the German language. Loans from English are the most numerous and have significantly contributed to the expansion of the German lexicon (Kaehlbrandt, 2016; Skender Libhard, 2020b).
The empirical part of the study includes an analysis of the translation procedures applied to approximately 700 anglicisms and pseudo–anglicisms from the German–Croatian Dictionary of Lexical Innovations (up to 2015), the results of which are compared with an analysis of the translation procedures applied to 300 anglicisms and pseudo–anglicisms from the German–Croatian Dictionary of Lexical Innovations (since 2015) available on the digital lexicographic platform DigilexPLUS.
The aim is to determine to what extent loanwords in German can be translated as loanwords in Croatian, or whether they require other translation procedures. Contrary to the expected dominance of retention, the results show frequent use of replacement with paraphrase and addition. This is confirmed by previous, though limited, similar studies (cf. Skender Libhard, 2020b).
