Hypocrisy of the International Economic Order: Economic Sanctions

Sažetak
The aim of this paper is to analyze the international economic order and the role of economic sanctions as an instrument of international policy, with particular emphasis on the European Union’s sanctions against the Russian Federation following its invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The paper examines the relationship between economic sanctions, economic security, and economic power, as well as the challenges associated with the implementation of sanctions in contemporary international relations. The research employs a mixed-methods approach that combines qualitative and quantitative research methods. It applies the methods of analysis and synthesis of scientific and professional literature in the fields of international economics, international relations, and security studies, together with a comparative analysis of contemporary geopolitical developments and the European Union’s economic measures against the Russian Federation, as well as a case study of the implementation of economic sanctions against the Russian Federation. A review of the relevant literature indicates that economic sanctions have become one of the most important instruments of political pressure in the international system, as they enable states to pursue political objectives without direct military intervention. Although sanctions can impose significant economic costs on the targeted state, the findings suggest that their political effectiveness is often limited. The case study of the sanctions imposed on the Russian Federation confirms that the extensive economic measures have neither brought an end to the aggression against Ukraine nor resulted in a significant change in Russian foreign policy. In conclusion, the findings indicate that the use of economic sanctions raises questions regarding the consistency of the international economic order and its
conformity with the principles of international law. The analysis demonstrates that, in practice, there is a discrepancy between the declared principles of the international order and their implementation, which may undermine its credibility, fairness, and consistency.
