Agronomic and physical properties of grain in oat cultivars grown under autumn and spring sowing date

Sažetak

No information is available about the effect of autumn and spring sowing on grain yield and quality of oat cultivars (Avena sativa L.) in Croatia. Thus, the main aim was to determine the agronomic and physical properties of winter oat cultivars grown at autumn and spring sowing dates. A field experiment with two winter cultivars (Bc Marta and Wiland) was carried out over two growing seasons in Gornja Posavina. Both cultivars were grown in autumn and spring sowing dates under intensive production management. Under the favorable growing conditions of the first year, grain yields were very high and averaged 7149 kg/ha. In the second year, severe lodging of the crop occurred due to an extremely strong storm in the first decade of June, when more than 60 mm of rain fell in a short period of time. The intense lodging of the crop (87 % on average) led to a significantly reduced 1000-grain weight (by an average of 29.4 %) and increased proportion of impurities (by an average of 13.7 %), and consequently grain yield averaged 3206 kg/ha only. Compared with the favorable growing conditions in the first year, the second production year was characterized by lower test weight (by an average of 7.5 %) as well as an increased proportion of small (<2.0 mm) and a decreased proportion of medium (2.0 – 2.5 mm) and large (>2.5 mm) grain fractions. Wiland produced higher grain yields when grown under the autumn sowing date, whereas Bc Marta showed the opposite pattern of response. Nevertheless, both cultivars had higher test weights in autumn than in spring sowing date. The higher test weight for Bc Marta compared to Wiland was associated with the larger 1000-grain weight, lower proportion of small and medium grain fractions, and less “empty hulls”. The findings indicate a high yield potential of the oat crop when grown under favorable production conditions in both autumn and spring sowing dates, while the tested cultivars differed in most physical grain quality traits.
