Summary: The Monastery of St. Mary at Glavotok: the beginnings and first decades of the Glavotok monastery

Abstract
Glavotok is the oldest site of Third Order Franciscan Glagolites on the island of Krk and a pilgrimage site for the faithful of Krk and all people of good will. The Glavotok monastery of Third Order Franciscan Glagolites is at an isolated location on the western side of Krk, where people have always found refuge for a penitent and solitary life. The small Church of St. Chrysogonus in Čavlena Cove, evoking the Old Croatian era, had a nearby shelter for pious and penitent women or hermits, to which there is testimony as far back as the 13th century. The Chapel/Church of St. Mary (S. Maria de Capo) with the surrounding land owned by the Krk counts, was mentioned here in 1277. Although one may easily discard the notion that St. Francis of Assisi came to Glavotok, the fact is that an eremitic community was documented at Glavotok already in the 13th century, and a Franciscan community came into possession of a vineyard at Glavotok through a deed of gift from the Krk counts in 1350. Henceforth they slowly began to be identified with that location. With time, certain other lands in the area became Franciscan property, and as of the latter half of the 15th century the Glavotok monastery was administered by the penitent branch, or Third Order, of the Franciscans. The benefactor of the Third Order Franciscan Glagolites was the last Krk count, Ivan VII Frankapan, who granted them the Glavotok estate. According to some scholars, this happened already in 1445, while others set the date at 1468. These tertiaries soon built a monastery and expanded the church. However, about thirty years later the same count expelled them, and accommodated the Paulines in their place. However, this did not last long and the tertiaries returned to Glavotok and transformed it into a pilgrimage site on this section of the island.
