Abstract

The period of the 20th century marks a paradigm shift and a different attitude towards children and childhood. With new scientific knowledge, there is also a greater interest in cultivating the environment in educational institutions. The idea of a sterile, unified and empty space in the classroom began to be questioned, and attention was paid to pedagogical and aesthetic elements that arouse children’s natural curiosity, active learning and social experiences. The greatest interest in the global sense is attracted by the Reggio approach, which in its entire existence symbolizes rebellion and escape from the traditional understanding of learning and arranging the kindergarten space. The architectural solutions of Reggio kindergarten and the aesthetic arrangement reflect a specific philosophy based on fundamental values and principles, which are the subject of inspiration for practitioners who want to build, question or change the kindergarten environment and practice. In this paper, the key principles that pedagogues and architects should think about together in order to achieve functional and Reggio-inspired spatial and material solutions in the organization of kindergarten space will be pointed out. The question of creating a kindergarten environment in accordance with the new paradigm, which starts from the child as a competent being, will be problematized.
