Marko Marulić’s Davidias and its Antecedents

Sažetak
While the Davidias was traditionally characterized as a ‘Vergilian’ epic poem, scholars have proven that Marulić’s ‘mental library’ was much broader. For example, we know
from the inventories of his library that Marulić possessed works by two of his younger
contemporaries: the epyllion De raptu Cerberi by Jakov Bunić and an Epithalamium by
Matej Andreis of Trogir. Echoes of these works have been recognized in the Davidias. It has
also been proven that Juvencus, Sedulius, and Arator – whose works Marulić read in Aldus
Manutius’s edition of the Poetae Christiani veteres – were important sources of inspiration
for the Davidias. This paper further investigates the possible use of contemporary, NeoLatin sources and models in the Davidias to determine if Marulić indeed had Quattrocento
poetry on his desk, or in his mind, since the title of his work appears to echo Francesco
Filelfo’s Sphortias, Tito Vespasiano Strozzi’s Borsias and Ugolino Verino’s Carlias. Marulić’s intertextual dependencies are assessed by examining the presence of common word
clusters and by applying stylometric software. The same analysis is performed on Marco
Girolamo Vida’s Christias and Damjan Beneša’s De morte Christi, two other examples of
Biblical epic poetry from nearly the same era, to determine how these poems relate to their
literary antecedents and to what extent the Davidias stands out.
