Abstract

The aim of this paper is to single out and pragmatically analyze pragmemes and pragmaphrasemes of death in selected poems by Antun Branko Šimić. The semantic and pragmatic field of death in A. B. Šimić’s poetry is exceptionally broad; the images of death are, as expected, black; collocations with the color are: wind, sky, birds, abyss – mostly confirming the concepts of death, while the contrasts life – illness – death – dust – stars prove the omnipresence of death. In his poetry, death is both death and Death – revived and personal. It can be seen, heard, smelled, felt with the palm of one’s hand, which is why this paper also deals with the art exhibition S onu stranu riječi – Šimić u likovnim djelima [Beyond the Word – Šimić in Works of Art], which is suitable for the multimodal approach to death, both in poetry by A. B. Šimić and in the intertextual and metatextual reception of his work.
