Sažetak
This paper considers Šimić’s poem Warning in a contemporary technological context, reinterpreting it as a warning that humankind may lose its autonomy and dignity in the face of the technological systems it creates. Viewed in the context of the technological singularity, Šimić’s verses take on a dystopian meaning, because the “stars” are no longer merely a metaphor for the cosmos and transcendence but also represent networks of algorithms, superintelligent systems, digital infrastructure, and non-human intelligence. The paper emphasizes that the question is no longer whether humans can create an intelligent machine, but whether they can remain subjects in a world of systems more intelligent than themselves. Futurists, inventors, and entrepreneurs working in the field of artificial intelligence are increasingly vocal in warning that humans will have to become, in a sense, cyborgs in order to keep pace with technological progress and the rapid development of communications. Numerous companies, including Google, work on technologies that will extend human lifespan by hundreds of years. Others work on bringing the dead back to life using artificial intelligence and nanotechnology to store data, behavioral patterns, and thought patterns, which will be encoded into a chip and implemented into the human body. There are plans to transfer human consciousness into mechanical bodies after biological ones die. Global developments remind us every day of the bitter truth of how weak we are in emotional relationships or decision making, and it
is realistic to expect that technological innovations will lead to the loss of fundamental human values. At the beginning of the last century, the poet wrote the Warning, in which he drew attention to a crucial point in human existence, the very point at which we find ourselves today. And if the many brilliant minds of the contemporary world were to summarize their thoughts in a few words, they would add: Man! Do not play God!
