Sažetak
This paper on the historical tragedy Damjan Juda by Ante Benešić, published in Zagreb in 1905, first deals with the recognizable influences of the figures from the Croatian literary and theatrical life, thanks to whose contacts and creative collaboration this drama came about. The study then goes on to analyze the influence of the ideas, structure and theme of the play and the author’s skill to finally move onto the inter-textual procedures and relationships. The historical tragedy Damjan Juda establishes a diachronic inter- textual relationship with the texts of past eras and different poetics such as medieval legends and historical chronicles and the genre of chivalrous passion, old Dubrovnik’s drama, oral literature and the Croatian historical tragedy of the 19th century by taking over its stylistic model and establishing intertextual relationships with
classical and romantic drama, or rather romantic classical tragedy. Considering the synchronic genre intertextuality, Benešić’s historical tragedy has been juxtaposed with Vojnović’s Ekvinocij and Dubrovačka trilogija. We have found that the tragedy Damjan Juda as a modernist text confirms the ideologemes of the art of the time and
the adoption of the poetics of artificial worlds together with the stylized past for the purpose of confronting contemporary world and its disordered reality.
