Abstract

The paper addresses several issues regarding the Croatian and Hungarian translations of the law book written by István Werbőczy. A brief analysis shows the translators were well-versed in both Latin and their native lan¬guages. It also reveals their shared attempt to render a legal text approac¬hable and comprehensible to the “common man” (“gemeine Männer”) in both theory and practice. A detailed analysis requires an examination of the translations of the Latin sentence structure – highly reduced in places – and of the construction of specific Hungarian and Croatian terminology. These are typologically unrelated languages, yet the translations present shared or very similar linguistic world views.
