Abstract

Students with behavioural problems are not a rare phenomenon in the school environment. For students with behavioural problems, the school institution represents an important context in terms of socialisation, and for stakeholders in the educational process, including school pedagogists, working with students with behavioural problems requires a special approach, which is realised and upgraded through professional development. The aim of this paper is to explore the connection between the professional development of school pedagogists concerning the topic of working with students with behavioural problems and the realisation of the above in pedagogical practice. The paper presents a quantitative study based on a sample of 53 school pedagogists from the Republic of Croatia. The sample of respondents was a random sample from the population of school pedagogists. The results of the research showed that pedagogists did not have a high opinion of the quality of previous professional training on the subject of students with behavioural problems. Nevertheless, the results showed an important connection and positive correlation of the effect of professional training in the topic of working with students with behavioural problems and the assessment of competence for working with students with behavioural problems. This shows how professional development creates positive implications in practice, which many researchers agree with.
