Abstract

The validity and consequences of the quark-line rule (QLR) are investigated in proton–antiproton annihilation into two and three mesons. Recent data on p p̅ → (two neutral pseudoscalar or vector mesons) are analysed to test the η–η′ mixing scheme with the QLR. It is found that a value of the mixing angle θₚₛ restricted to −26° < θₚₛ < −2.2° is consistent with the QLR. The data on p p̅ → π⁰ρ⁰, π⁰ω, nω, nρ⁰ and the dominance of the annihilation quark-line diagram (QLD) favours θₚₛ ≃ −20°. Predictions of the QLR for p p̅ → M₁M₂M₂ under the dominance of different QLD’s are derived and their experimental test discussed.
